John Penny Performs at Water Works Park Minneapolis

Water Works Park by the Mississippi river in Minneapolis is host to John Penny's "Down By The Riverside" Juneteenth concert. Waterworks Park is a City of Minneapolis project featuring greenspace with native foliage and a two-story pavilion that includes outdoor plazas, visitor amenities, and a new restaurant overlooking the river. Here John Penny presents his solo singer-songwriter-guitarist show with original World Jazz instrumentals and vocals. While performing as a one person act, he has designed and recorded backing tracks of other instruments that perform with him on stage. Audiences will hear a guitar led ”virtual band” with drums, bass, horns, strings, and more. Among other influences, Pennys' original Jazz is infused by Afro-Cuban, Folk, Euro-Classic, and Blues persuasions.
Along with thousands of stage appearances, Penny has a background in creating soundtracks for TV commercials, films, and theater productions. This has given him the tools to translate his musical ideas into diverse virtual "soundscapes" or "bandscapes". The "bandscapes" are sounds and dream combinations of musicians not typically found playing together. While the “virtual musicians” that he composes for are unseen, they are clearly heard as an integral part of the performance.

Performing at the Sanctuary is a homecoming of sorts for composer, guitarist, and singer John Penny. Iowa City, the U of Iowa, and the Sanctuary, all played a part in Penny's early development in the worlds of Jazz and Classical music. The eclectic training from early in Penny's career in Iowa City and the many film scoring projects that followed contribute to Penny's Global Jazz Fusion genre of today. A Minneapolis, MN version of the band Penny led called Solstice recorded two songs for an album of the same name at the Sanctuary in 1977. For this performance, Penny will appear solo, accompanied by a diverse range of organic backing tracks he designed and recorded for his original songs. Iowa City folks who remember Penny's associated bands; Combinations, Solstice, Mother Blues, or others, do check this out. There's still some Iowa City in Penny's' music of today. The Sanctuary Pub is also a place for amazingly delicious food.

Bruce Henrys' 50 Years In Music Celebration - John Penny is Guest Composer/Guitarist

John Penny makes a guest appearance with Bruce Henry and his band for Bruce's 50 Years In Music celebration at the Dakota Jazz Club. Bruce Henry is one of Chicago’s premier vocalists whose performances that celebrate The Evolution of African American Music, as well as his lectures are sought after around the country. The band will perform Realization, a John Penny composition from Bruce and John's shared history as members of the band Solstice. Realization is on the band's now rare 1977 vinyl LP, also known as Solstice. The LP was re-released in 2011 as a mini LP (CD) by Riverman Music in Seoul South Korea.

At the Minnesota Men's conference, multi-genre composer, guitarist, vocalist, and educator, John Penny presents "Jazz Was Here". Jazz Was Here is a variant of John Penny's popular "Music Was Here" presentation.
With his own compositions, Penny presents a picture of Jazz evolution from early to modern Jazz. His music fuses Jazz, South American, African, and European influences. With his musical performance, he adds engaging readings of his Jazz poetry and essays to the performance. While appearing as a soloist, Penny is joined by “virtual” backing bands with accompaniments that he created for his songs. His shows educate as they entertain, reflecting on his background that includes sound design and audio engineering. John Penny has composed music for advertising, films, and theatrical productions. His performance credits include stints with Minneapolis legend Cornbread Harris and national figures such as Captain Jack MacDuff, Bernard Purdie, and Erik Gravatt. As a Classical music composer, he was a winner of the 2018 New Orchestral Works competition from the Minnesota Sinfonia.
