John Penny and The virtual Band bring original World Jazz, Roots music, and Cinematic Jazz, to The Golden Thyme Restaurant and Bar. The renovated Golden Thyme remains in the heart of the Rondo neighborhood, a historic cultural haven of St Paul, MN. This project comes from a solo singer songwriter that from birth, was deeply affected by a wide range of musical and cultural influences. Those childhood experiences helped feed a film scoring and sound design career on top of one as a Jazz guitarist. Penny has been graced with inspirational gigs and recording sessions with Bernard Purdie, Eric Kamau Gravatt, Jack McDuff and other legends of Jazz history. From the intimacy of guitar and voice, to the lushness of full Jazz or Classical chamber ensembles, evocative arrangements expand the sonic palette of Penny's Minnesota grown compositions. Guitar improvisations trade time and interact with lyrics sung in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. This show carries a range of musical textures from visceral down home Blues, to contemplative chamber works. The impartial and positive messaging from many types of music, promote unity, harmony, and peace. Composing guitarist and singer John Penny and the Virtual Band bring musical inspiration to Tunes on The Turf Music Series with original World Jazz and American Roots music. With decades of experience playing Jazz and scoring music for film and theater, Penny’s ever evolving project brings custom backing soundscapes with exotic instruments from around the World to the stage. Penny's emotive guitar explorations are in reply to lyrical statements sung in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The show is about music for the times crafted to feed the spirits of all in a shrinking world.
